How to use it
  1. Choose a direction — Add VAT or Extract VAT.
  2. Enter the price (net if adding, gross if extracting).
  3. Enter the VAT rate, or quick-select a country's standard rate.
  4. Read the resulting net price, VAT amount, and gross price.
Formula
Add VAT: VAT amount = net price × (rate ÷ 100); gross price = net price + VAT amount. Extract VAT: net price = gross price ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100); VAT amount = gross price − net price.
Worked example

Adding 20% UK VAT to a $100 net price: $20 VAT, $120 gross. Extracting VAT from a $120 gross price at 20%: divide by 1.20 to get a $100 net price and $20 VAT.

Interpreting your result

Rates shown are standard national rates from a mid-2026 survey, illustrative not exhaustive. Most countries also apply reduced or 0% rates to specific categories. VAT-registered retail prices outside the US are normally already VAT-inclusive, unlike US sales tax. Confirm the current rate before relying on this for a real transaction.

Recommendations
  • When extracting VAT from a receipt, always divide by (1 + rate), never subtract the rate percentage.
  • VAT-registered retail prices outside the US are normally already tax-inclusive on the shelf.
  • Canada's figure is a blended illustrative average — check your specific province for the real rate.
Frequently asked questions
Sales tax is typically added on top at checkout; VAT is collected in stages, and displayed retail prices outside the US are normally already VAT-inclusive.
