About the Recipe Scaler

Scales every ingredient in a recipe up or down by a target servings ratio, rounding each scaled quantity to the nearest common kitchen fraction (1/8, 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, 2/3, 3/4, etc.) instead of an awkward decimal a measuring cup can't actually measure.

How to use it
  1. Enter how many servings the original recipe makes, and how many you want to scale it to.
  2. Enter each ingredient's name, quantity, and unit — add or remove rows as needed.
  3. Read the scaled quantity for each ingredient.
Formula
Scale factor = target servings ÷ original servings. Scaled quantity = original quantity × scale factor, then rounded to the nearest common fraction.
Worked example

A recipe for 4 that uses 2 cups flour, scaled to serve 6 (a 1.5× factor): flour becomes 3 cups exactly.

Interpreting your result

This scales every ingredient by the same linear ratio. It doesn't adjust for ingredients that don't scale linearly — leavening agents, salt, and spices often need proportionally less at large scale-ups. Pan size/bake time almost never scale linearly either.

Recommendations
  • Salt, leavening, and spices often taste 'too strong' if scaled up by the same large factor — many bakers scale these slightly less for big batches.
  • Doubling or tripling a recipe rarely means doubling the bake time.
  • For a very large scale factor, consider whether your pan/oven can actually accommodate the volume.
