About the Extended Warranty Value Calculator

Helps you weigh an extended warranty or protection plan on the numbers: given its price, coverage period, your estimated odds of needing a covered repair, and what that repair typically costs, it calculates the plan's expected value.

How to use it
  1. Enter the warranty's cost and coverage period.
  2. Enter your best estimate of the probability you'll need a covered repair.
  3. Enter the typical cost of that repair if it happens.
  4. Read the expected value and break-even probability.
Formula
Expected repair payout = probability of repair Γ— typical repair cost. Expected value of the warranty = expected repair payout βˆ’ warranty cost. Break-even probability = warranty cost Γ· typical repair cost.
Worked example

A $200 warranty covering a repair that typically costs $600, with a 20% estimated chance of needing it: expected payout = $120, against a $200 price, for a net expected value of βˆ’$80 β€” you'd need at least a 33.3% repair probability for the plan to break even.

Interpreting your result

A negative expected value doesn't automatically make a warranty a bad purchase β€” insurance and warranties are priced above the average payout because the seller needs a profit margin, and their real purpose is reducing the risk of a large, unpredictable loss.

Recommendations
  • β€’ Be honest about your probability estimate β€” manufacturer failure-rate data or reliability surveys are a better source than a salesperson's pitch.
  • β€’ Check what your existing coverage already includes.
  • β€’ The math favors skipping the warranty on inexpensive items you could comfortably replace out of pocket.
Frequently asked questions
Not necessarily β€” expected value measures the average outcome across many buyers, not your personal risk tolerance.
