About the VO2 Max Estimator

Estimates VO2 max (maximal oxygen uptake, a standard measure of aerobic fitness) from the distance you cover running as far as possible in exactly 12 minutes, using the Cooper test formula — a field-test estimate, not a lab measurement.

How to use it
  1. Run as far as possible, at a steady hard effort, for exactly 12 minutes, and record the distance covered.
  2. Enter that distance and its units (miles, kilometers, or meters).
  3. Enter your age and sex (fitness bands are population norms, split by sex).
  4. Read your estimated VO2 max and fitness category.
Formula
VO2 max (ml/kg/min) = (distance in meters − 504.9) ÷ 44.73 — the Cooper (1968) regression equation, derived from correlating 12-minute run distance with directly measured VO2 max in a validation study. Fitness category is read from age-and-sex-specific population norm bands for the same 12-minute distance.
Worked example

Covering 1.5 miles (2,414m) in 12 minutes at age 30: VO2 max ≈ (2,414 − 504.9) ÷ 44.73 ≈ 42.7 ml/kg/min, landing in the 'Good' fitness category for a 30-year-old male using the age/sex-specific distance bands.

This is a field-test estimate from the Cooper 12-minute run formula, not a lab-measured VO2 max — the actual gold standard uses direct expired-gas analysis during a graded exercise test. Pacing, motivation, running economy, weather, and surface all affect the distance you can cover, so treat this as a fitness-tracking estimate rather than a diagnostic number. Fitness category bands are population norms by age and sex, not a personalized medical assessment.

Recommendations
  • Pace evenly rather than starting too fast — an even effort across all 12 minutes typically covers more total distance than an aggressive start followed by a big slowdown.
  • Retest under similar conditions (same course, similar weather) for the most meaningful comparison over time — surface, wind, and heat all affect the distance you can cover independent of actual fitness changes.
