How to use it
- Start typing the displayed passage into the text box — the timer starts on your first keystroke.
- Finish the passage to see your final speed and accuracy.
- Click New text to try a different passage.
Formula
WPM = (words typed) ÷ (elapsed minutes)
Accuracy = (correctly typed characters ÷ total characters typed) × 100
Worked example
Typing a 40-word passage in 30 seconds works out to about 80 words per minute.
Typing speed benchmarks

| Average / casual typist | ~35–40 |
| Mobile / phone typing | ~36 |
| Professional typist | 43–80 |

| Competitive / elite | 120+ |
| World record (15-second burst) | ~300–305 |
Recommendations
- • The timer starts on your first keystroke, not when the passage appears — read it first without penalty.
- • Accuracy counts every character position, so one early mistake can cascade into more red characters than expected.
- • Try a few rounds on fresh passages rather than repeating the same text for a more realistic average.
Frequently asked questions
WPM methods vary — some count every 5 characters as a 'word' regardless of boundaries, while this tool counts actual space-separated words, which can differ for the same performance.
