About the Tile Calculator

Calculates how many tiles (and boxes, if sold by the box) are needed for a floor or wall, from the area's dimensions, the tile size, and a waste-factor buffer.

How to use it
  1. Enter the room or wall's length and width in feet.
  2. Enter the tile's width and length in inches.
  3. Adjust the waste factor for your layout.
  4. Optionally enter tiles per box to see boxes needed.
  5. Read the tiles (and boxes) to buy.
Formula
Room area = length × width. Tile area (sq ft) = (tile width ÷ 12) × (tile length ÷ 12). Area with waste = room area × (1 + waste %). Tiles needed = ceiling(area with waste ÷ tile area). Boxes needed = ceiling(tiles needed ÷ tiles per box).
Worked example

A 10ft × 10ft room with 12x12in tiles and a 10% waste factor: area with waste is 110 sq ft, requiring 110 tiles.

Interpreting your result

Tile counts are always rounded up to the next whole tile. 10% waste is a widely used baseline for a simple straight-lay room; increase for diagonal, offset, or brick-pattern layouts. Box quantities vary by manufacturer. This calculator doesn't compute grout, thinset/mortar, or underlayment.

Recommendations
  • Diagonal and patterned layouts need more waste allowance (15-20%+) than a simple straight lay (10%).
  • Buy all tiles from the same production run/dye lot when possible.
  • Keep 1 extra box in reserve after finishing, in case of future repairs.
