About the Gym Membership Value Calculator

Calculates the true cost per visit of a gym membership from the monthly fee and expected visits, and compares it against paying a drop-in/day-pass rate each time — showing the breakeven number of visits per month where the membership becomes the cheaper option.

How to use it
  1. Enter your monthly membership fee.
  2. Enter how many visits per month you realistically expect to make.
  3. Enter the pay-per-visit or drop-in rate.
  4. Read your cost per visit, total pay-per-visit cost, and the breakeven visit count.
Formula
Cost per visit = monthly fee ÷ visits. Pay-per-visit total = visits × drop-in rate. Breakeven visits = ceiling(monthly fee ÷ drop-in rate).
Worked example

A $50/month membership used 8 times a month, versus a $15 drop-in rate: cost per visit = $6.25; paying per visit for the same 8 visits would cost $120, so the membership saves $70/month. Breakeven is 4 visits/month.

Interpreting your result

This compares raw dollar cost only — it doesn't factor in contract lock-in, cancellation fees, or the convenience of not paying per session.

Recommendations
  • If you're visiting fewer times than the breakeven number most months, paying per visit may genuinely be cheaper.
  • A typical US gym membership runs about $30-$70/month, and typical drop-in rates run about $10-$20/visit.
  • This doesn't factor in contract lock-in or cancellation fees.
Frequently asked questions
It's the smallest number of monthly visits at which the membership costs exactly the same as paying the drop-in rate every time.
