About the Credit Score Simulator

Illustrates, directionally, how a handful of common actions (paying down utilization, an on-time payment streak, a missed payment, a new hard inquiry, adding a different credit type) tend to move a FICO-style score — using FICO's own published category weights, scaled to a simplified swing budget, since the actual proprietary algorithm can't be reproduced by any outside tool.

How to use it
  1. Enter your starting (illustrative) score.
  2. Enter your credit utilization now and what you'd bring it to.
  3. Enter a consecutive on-time payment streak length.
  4. Toggle whether you've missed a payment, opened a new account, or added a different credit type.
  5. Read the estimated score change and directional per-factor contribution.
Formula
Each action's effect = its FICO category weight (payment history 35%, amounts owed 30%, length of history 15%, new credit 10%, credit mix 10%) × a simplified swing budget (150 points) × a magnitude reflecting how large that specific action is (e.g. how much utilization changed, how long the on-time streak is). All effects are added directionally to the starting score, clamped to the 300-850 FICO range.
Worked example

A 650 starting score, reducing utilization from 60% to 20%, with a 12-month on-time payment streak and no other changes: an illustrative estimated increase to the high-600s or low-700s range, driven mostly by the utilization improvement (30% category weight) and the payment streak (35% category weight).

Interpreting your result

This is not a real FICO or VantageScore calculation — the actual proprietary algorithm evaluates your entire credit file together and cannot be reproduced by any outside tool, including this one. This simulator applies simple, capped directional adjustments based on FICO's own published category weights purely to illustrate which way, and roughly how much, common actions tend to move a score. The CFPB has noted that an educational score can differ meaningfully from the score a lender actually uses for roughly 1 in 4 consumers. Never use this to predict, guarantee, or substitute for your real credit score — check your card issuer's free score, myFICO, or an official credit bureau for that.

Recommendations
  • Payment history (35%) and amounts owed/utilization (30%) are FICO's two most heavily weighted categories combined — prioritize on-time payments and lower utilization over other actions if you're trying to improve a real score.
  • A missed payment is modeled as the single most damaging action here, consistent with FICO's own guidance that payment history is the largest category — the actual real-world hit depends on how late the payment was and your existing credit history.
  • This tool is educational only — check your actual score via your card issuer, myFICO, or an official credit bureau rather than relying on any simulator's output.
Frequently asked questions
No — it's an illustrative, directional estimate only. FICO's actual algorithm is proprietary, evaluates your whole credit file together, and cannot be reproduced by any outside tool.
