About the College Net Price Calculator
Estimates net price — sticker price (tuition, room & board, and other costs) minus expected grant/scholarship aid — since net price, not the published sticker price, is what most families actually pay for college.
- Choose a starting point (public in-state, public out-of-state, private, or custom) to prefill national-average tuition and room & board.
- Adjust tuition, room & board, and other costs to your specific school if known.
- Enter your expected grant/scholarship aid — ideally from that school's own Net Price Calculator.
- Read your estimated net price versus the sticker price.
A public in-state school (about $11,950 tuition + $12,639 room & board + $2,000 other costs = $26,589 sticker price) with $8,000 in expected grant aid: an estimated net price of $18,589 — a 30% effective discount rate.
| School type | Tuition & fees | Room & board |
|---|---|---|
| Public 4-year, in-state | $11,950 | $12,639 |
| Public 4-year, out-of-state | $31,880 | $12,639 |
| Private nonprofit 4-year | $45,000 | $14,406 |
This tool cannot know what grant/scholarship aid any specific school will actually offer you — federal law requires every US college to publish its own Net Price Calculator (usually on its financial aid website), which uses that school's own aid formulas and your actual financial details to give a real, individualized estimate. Use that school-specific tool for a real number, then enter its result as 'expected grant/scholarship aid' here. 'Grant/scholarship aid' means aid you don't repay — it excludes loans, which reduce your net price but don't reduce what you ultimately pay including interest. Preset sticker prices are 2025-26 College Board national averages, not any specific school's actual cost.
- • Always use a school's own Net Price Calculator (required by federal law on every college's website) for a real, individualized aid estimate — this tool's presets are national averages, not any specific school's actual pricing.
- • Private schools often have higher sticker prices but also larger average grant aid — the net price gap between public and private schools is frequently much smaller than the sticker-price gap alone suggests.
- • Loans reduce net price but not total cost — track loan amounts separately from grant aid, since loans must be repaid with interest.
